What is Emsela ?

EMSELLA is a treatment method that uses High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, thereby improving symptoms of urinary incontinence.

How Emsela Works

Hyfem selectively activates motor neurons, causing powerful muscle contractions that cannot be achieved through regular pelvic floor muscle exercises.
These muscle contractions strengthen the pelvic floor muscles that support the bladder, helping you regain control over urination.

While sitting in the treatment device for 30 minutes, high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy stimulates the entire pelvic floor muscles, inducing approximately 17,040 hypermaximal muscle contractions per treatment to strengthen the muscles.

EMSELLA's Effects

By strengthening the pelvic floor muscles non-invasively using High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM®) technology, EMSELLA offers improvements in urinary incontinence, postpartum vaginal laxity, and vaginal mucosal laxity.
It also provides benefits in the recovery from erectile dysfunction.
Effects of Emsera

EMSELLA® utilizes HIFEM® technology to selectively target motor neurons responsible for muscle control, inducing powerful muscle contractions deep within the tissue.
The unique HIFEM® energy penetrates up to 10 cm deep into the pelvic floor, triggering supermaximal muscle contractions at a high repetition rate independent of brain control.

As a result, during a single 28-minute treatment session, EMSELLA induces approximately 17,000 muscle contractions, surpassing the intensity and frequency achievable with traditional Kegel exercises.
This efficient strengthening of the pelvic floor muscles promotes the growth of muscle fibers, as evidenced by ultrasound images showing significant enhancement of the pelvic floor muscles before and after treatment.

Aging of the Female Genitalia

Organs such as the uterus, ovaries, and vagina are highly influenced by estrogen, a type of female hormone.
As women age, the secretion of estrogen declines, similar to how skin elasticity and moisture diminish. This process also affects the vagina, leading to "vaginal atrophy."

Vaginal atrophy starts with a loss of moisture and drying of the vaginal walls, which become thin and less elastic, making them more prone to injury.
As vaginal atrophy progresses, it can cause changes in the external genitalia, along with symptoms such as dryness, itching, odor, pain during intercourse, laxity, and urinary incontinence, significantly impacting quality of life.
Estrogen levels decrease rapidly around the age of 40, making vaginal atrophy a common issue for women.

Vaginal atrophy results in various discomforting symptoms:

Reduced vaginal blood flow leads to dryness, decreased secretions, and causes pain, dryness, itching, and burning sensation during intercourse.
Decreased mucosal collagen reduces vaginal folds, making them thin and susceptible to pain during intercourse.

EMSELLA effectively alleviates and improves these symptoms.

Differences with Vaginal HIFEM

Vaginal HIFEM involves focusing ultrasound from a handheld device inserted into the vagina onto the submucosal layer to generate heat. This heat aims to repair shrunken collagen and stimulate new collagen production, thereby increasing vaginal elasticity and thickness to improve vaginal laxity. As a result, the pelvic floor muscles are supported, reducing symptoms like urinary incontinence. The significant difference lies in how Vaginal HIFEM targets the vagina directly, aiming to improve the pelvic floor muscles themselves, which distinguishes it as a treatment approach compared to EMSELLA.

Types of urinary incontinence

Which of the five types of urinary incontinence do you suffer from?

Urinary incontinence is defined as the involuntary leakage of urine.

The number of people suffering from urinary incontinence in the world is the third largest after China and India in terms of the population of the country.

In Japan, a survey of women aged 20-64 years old showed that the incidence of urinary incontinence is 16.7%.

①Stress urinary incontinence
This refers to the condition in which urine leaks when the stomach is strained.
It occurs when coughing, sneezing, laughing loudly, lifting heavy objects, or making strenuous movements during exercise.
It is believed that aging, childbirth, menopause, and lifestyle habits (lack of exercise, obesity, etc.) are the causes.
Stress urinary incontinence is the most common type of urinary incontinence.

②Urge urinary incontinence
This is a condition in which you suddenly feel the need to go to the toilet and cannot hold it in, resulting in leakage.
It can also occur when touching something cold or hearing the sound of water.
A condition with symptoms of urge incontinence is called overactive bladder.
When bladder control is lost and the bladder contracts excessively even when the amount of urine is small and the bladder is not distended, there is a sudden sense of urgency to urinate.
When this urgency is accompanied by urinary leakage, it is considered urge incontinence.
It is thought to be caused by stress or neurological disorders.
In men, prostatic hyperplasia can also lead to urge incontinence.

③Mixed incontinence
Mixed incontinence is a combination of stress incontinence and urge incontinence.

④Overflow incontinence
A condition in which the urethra becomes blocked, making it difficult to urinate, and residual urine involuntarily overflows from the bladder.
This also includes cases where the bladder distends and urine leaks because the patient does not feel the need to urinate.
It is often associated with prostate problems (benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer), so it has been reported that the incidence is higher in men.
Another possible cause is that the nerves do not function normally.

⑤Functional urinary incontinence
This type of urinary incontinence is not related to problems with urinary function or pelvic organs, but occurs due to a decline in mental function, such as decreased physical motor function or dementia.
If a person is unaware or unconcerned about needing to go to the toilet due to illness, it is considered to be functional urinary incontinence.
Emsera can treat two types of urinary incontinence: stress urinary incontinence and urge urinary incontinence.
One course of treatment requires six sessions, and you can feel improvement after just one treatment.
Research has shown that the number of absorbent pads used is reduced by 75%.

The role of the pelvic floor muscles

The role of the pelvic floor muscles

The pelvic floor muscles, as the name suggests, are a group of muscles located at the bottom of the pelvis. These muscles support the urethra, vagina, and rectum, and play a crucial role in controlling urination and defecation. Additionally, the pelvic floor muscles stabilize the pelvis, helping to prevent lower back pain and abdominal discomfort.

While often not consciously controlled, the pelvic floor muscles can weaken due to factors like lack of exercise or childbirth. Weak pelvic floor muscles can lead to symptoms such as urinary or fecal incontinence. Moreover, their weakening can destabilize the pelvis, contributing to lower back pain and abdominal discomfort.

Because these muscles are difficult to consciously strengthen and prone to weakening, it is important to strengthen them using methods like EMSELLA to maintain their function and prevent associated symptoms.

Features of エムセラ

  • POINT
    1

    Treatment While Sitting

With a treatment duration of 28 minutes per session, you can sit comfortably on a specialized chair applicator. You can read magazines or use your mobile phone while undergoing treatment. There’s no need to change clothes or expose your body, as the treatment is non-invasive.

  • POINT
    2

    No Downtime

There is minimal downtime involved; you can resume normal activities almost immediately after treatment. Since the treatment induces muscle contractions in the pelvic floor muscles, there may be some discomfort akin to muscle soreness post-treatment, which typically subsides within 2-3 days.

  • POINT
    3

    Strengthening the Pelvic Floor Muscles

Pelvic floor muscles are notoriously difficult to strengthen on your own. This treatment is not only effective for urinary incontinence but also suitable for addressing sexual discomfort due to aging or childbirth, as well as for improving waistline concerns.

  • POINT
    4

    Vaginal Training

You can easily strengthen your muscles by sitting on the treatment device for 30 minutes without undressing. There are no daily life constraints, allowing you to carry on as usual.
